Sluices were used to regulate the operation of irrigations ditches and mills.

In order to draw water from the river Lambro and use it in irrigations ditches, or also deviate water to mills and to move wheels, a system of sluices was developed along the river. These sluices are still active and are the following: the Sluice of Bertoli, near the homonym bridge, that regulated the flow rate of the Roggia dei Mulini Asciutti (literally the “Irrigation Ditch of Dry Mills”), and the Sluice, or Waterfall, of Cantone that carried the water of  the homonym mill.
